About Oxfordshire Nature Explorers - Our Story & Mission

About Us

A single mum and her 9 year old, off on adventures.

Our Story

We've always been a family that pootles along a country track, spending hours turning over stones and leaves and seeing what we can uncover. This year, Little Leopard asked to get more serious about nature exploration, recording and sharing his experiences. So started our Saturday adventures.

I've started sharing our days out so that our friends can check out some of the fabulous nature nearby in Oxfordshire.

I hope this can grow to be a useful resource for others, sharing an honest account of what our nature sessions are like, and also giving us a place to connect with others who also get excited over slow worms and even slower strolls through woods. (Our walking speed on the adventures is 1.5 miles an hour because we stop to examine everything).

Little Leopard (against his wishes, I will not let him have a proper internet profile yet) always asks me about bird songs, trees and flowers that that we see. And honestly, as I start this journey I don't know much yet, but I' do know that the days of "lets ask pops" are over. When I discover a slice of nature with an interesting background, I'll share it here.

I work as a SEN TA, and I've found nature activities to be highly regulating for all our learners, no matter their stage of engagement. So as well as sharing activities that me and Little Leopard are doing, I'll share the ones that have worked well at school.

Come say hi on instagram or facebook, I'd love to hear from you, what great adventures you've had, what exciting mini and not so mini beasts you've come across.

See you there. Binoculars at the ready.

Lucy

A fun-filled day spent exploring the adventure playground, spotting deer, getting up close with birds of prey and strolling round the gardens and arboretum.

Cothill Fen

A long walk with a distinctly Jurasic vibe through the most diverse area in Oxfordshire, taking in FIVE nature reserves. We saw solitary bees, fossils, woodpeckers and some impressive geology.

A gorgeous walk from Radley Station to Abingdon under the sounding bridge, around the lake and through Barton Fields, hearing an astonishing number of birds.
